10 online professionals to watch on Twitter in 2011

Twitter logoThe world still seems to have an insatiable hunger for social media, in particular Facebook and now also Google+.  Twitter has been storming ahead during the past year. Recent months have seen immense user growth for Twitter, most recently even Pope Benedict XVI (@news_va_en) started tweeting!

Just like our 2009 and 2010 lists, this one includes some familiar faces as well some names new to Twitter and perhaps new to you as well. For each of them we have picked selected a tweet to give you a taste of their style and what awoke our curiosity. Enjoy!

  1. Astrid Haug@astridhaug: Astrid Haug is community manager at a Danish national newspaper Berlingske, where she works on improving use of social media and on developing online journalism generally. In the past she worked for the City of Copenhagen, as press and campaign consultant for a Danish political party and as unpaid fundraiser in 2004 for the John Perry for President campaign. Her tweets tend to move somewhere in the space between traditional and new media

  2. Claire Flanagan@cflanagan: Claire Flanagan is CSC’s Director of Enterprise Social Business Collaboration and Communities Strategy. She led CSC’s industry award winning social business collaboration implementation currently enjoying a 67,000+ active member rate. She also recently oversaw the implementation of CSC’s public-facing social business platform and is one of the leading Enterprise 2.0 adopters and visionaries in the US. Claire is also speaking on the intranet conference track in Aarhus in November.

  3. Martin White, IntranetFocus@IntranetFocus: Martin White is a UK-based information scientist with a passion for intranets and a global list of customers and conference appearances. On his account, named after his professional services firm Intranet Focus, he generously shares relevant reading, insights from his current projects and the occasional comment about travelling the world and having a home office. Martin is also speaking on the going mobile conference track in Aarhus in November.

  4. Julia H Grace@jewelia: Julia Grace recently joined VigLink, a content monetization company based in San Francisco, California. Previously she was with the IBM Almaden Research USER group, where she built applications and lead teams in both the social computing and the data visualization groups. In her tweets you get a good sense of her passion for better user experiences and why she is such an amazing conference speaker

  5. Kent Bottles@KentBottles: Dr. Kent Bottles has held a number of leadership positions in academia, biotechnology, and community health systems. Since we started following Kent, we’ve learned a tremendous amount from his tweets. Don’t be overwhelmed by his volume of tweets; you can quickly scan the ones that interest you. Kent is also speaking on the online health conference track in Aarhus in November.

  6. Margaret Heffernan@M_Heffernan: Margaret Heffernan is an entrepreneur, serial CEO and author. In her time at the BBC, she wrote, directed, produced and commissioned dozens of documentaries and dramas. Later she managed, bought and sold leading Internet businesses and was named one of the Internet’s Top 100 by Silicon Alley Reporter in 1999.
