Technologies for the upcoming web: Standards for the next web platform

Track: Emerging technologies
Conference Day #1, Wednesday November 3rd, 10.30-12.00

We want to create richer and more enjoyable user experiences on the web. New needs have emerged, driven by user expectations and desires, and by the functionality of software and hardware for new kinds of devices.

The way we use the well-known old web technologies are really beyond what they were defined to support. We want to create exciting web applications that can be built and deployed in a cost-effective way, and have confidence that they work as we expect. This is what on-going work on web technology standardisation is currently addressing. Within World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) this is one of the most active standardisation areas.

In this talk, Olle will present an update on the state of standardisation of HTML5 and CSS2/CSS3, two of the core technologies for rich web applications. He will also give a glimpse of results and plans for other supporting web technologies, like SVG, audio/video, mobile platforms (geolocation, device APIs, ...), widgets, etc., that enable the web to be a ubiquitous platform for network-based applications.

The presentation will cover technical perspectives, touch upon motivating requirements and use cases, and say something on how far standardisation on these technologies has progressed. And hopefully even some demos can illustrate what the emerging new technologies offer.

Is HTML5 going to replace Flash? What will be the standards for mobile devices? Is W3C still relevant in its current form? In this final, interactive track session, you will get a chance to discuss web standards and ask questions for Olle Olsson from W3C.

Together with the track moderater - Peter Sejersen from J. Boye - Olle will also wrap up the track. Let's discuss how we can use and implement the insights shared at the Emerging Tchnologies 's track.
