Oxfam is a global International Non-Government Organisation (INGO) whose purpose is to work with others to overcome poverty and suffering around the world. As part of an international confederation of 14 organizations, Oxfam works in 99 countries and with partners and allies around the world, fighting poverty and injustice on the basis that everyone has 5 basic rights (to a sustainable livelihood, basic social services, life and security, to be heard and to equity). Oxfam works at all levels from global to local, including international governments, global institutions as well as with local communities and individuals, to ensure that everyone’s rights are fulfilled and protected.
Oxfam was formed in Oxford, England, in May 1942, as the ‘Oxford Committee for Famine Relief’. Its initial concern was to highlight the problems created by the Nazi occupation of Greece, and to raise money for the Red Cross to send supplies to those in need. Oxfam GB is now one of the 14 affiliate organizations, with around 4,500 staff based in approximately 70 countries, including approximately 2,000 in the UK. The Head Office remains in Oxford, with regional offices around the country, as well as over 22,000 UK volunteers working in 720+ shops, giving their time for free to help raise money for Oxfam’s cause.
