Web Developer, Ohio State University Libraries
Jim Muir is a Web Developer at the Ohio State University Libraries. He has led the development and redesign of the OSU Libraries web site. This includes implementing a CMS, leading an iterative, feedback-driven redesign, and integrating the CMS with current and future systems.
Jim has also developed a web application that has allowed Library faculty to easily create reusable subject-specific content which is then seamlessly delivered directly to students though Ohio State University’s learning management system. This reusable content is also pulled into our CMS, allowing the content to be displayed on our public web site.
Ohio State University Libraries provides access to information resources in person, online and over the phone at 15 locations across the Columbus campus, through the system's web site, library.osu.edu, and at 614-292-OSUL (6785).
Web content management, Conference Day #1, Wednesday May 5th, 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm
The Ohio State University Libraries’ Web site is large, with over 100,000 files and a decentralized content model. In order to streamline the method by which content providers added content to the site, facilitate a consistent design, and ease maintenance of the site, it was determined that a content management system was needed.
Since we are mostly a PHP development team and use a LAMP server environment, we were confident that we would find a PHP open source content management system that would fit our needs. The selection process involved requirements gathering and the thorough tests of 3 different open-source content management systems
This presentation will describe our selection process with an emphasis on the how we evaluated and ranked our top 3 content management system choices, which then led us to a final selection.
