Online strategy, Conference Day #1, Wednesday May 5th, 10.30 am - 12.00 am

This talk will explore the difference between management and governance, and explain how they impact upon the strategies and tactics required for the efficient and effective delivery of an organisation's web presence.
Reference will be made to the LSE experience to illustrate and ground these terms, which so often fail to translate into practice.

LSE is a unique organisation where world renowned academic staff routinely engage in external activities with governments, NGOs, charities, and commercial organisations. This talk follows on from a radical redevelopment of its web presence, involving a series of projects led by the speaker: procurement and deployment of a new CMS, migration of the LSE website to the CMS, review of its web presence, delivery of a new website and search facility, and now an ongoing programme of enhancements.

Universities excel at governance, with significant resource and structure dedicated to it. Arguably they go too far, but nonetheless there is a lot to be learnt from universities. So how does this apply to other organisations? Models will be presented for participants to consider, take away and deploy.
