Sharing intranet experiences with peers

kester-seibertThe intranet is something employees expect just to work, but doesn’t give much thought to. They have work to do. On the contrary Kester Seibert‘s role at German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd is giving it a lot of thought.

Kester belongs to the IT team which is responsible for the intranet at Hapag-Lloyds headquarter in Hamburg, Germany. In his view, the structure and regular meetings with peers in the J. Boye Hamburg intranet expert group works very well in facilitating generous knowledge sharing with other intranet specialists and internal communication professionals alike.

In this brief posting, Kester shares how he has found inspiration and solutions by being active in the intranet community.

Intranet can be a lonely task, but here comes the community  

According to Kester, the value of a professional community is a place where he can meet face-to-face and shout out ideas in a confidential setting and be sure to receive a cascade of different perspectives and opinions.

The group also acts as a social gathering point where he can talk to other people working with intranet, as well as a place where he can gather fresh insights from communication professionals with widely different backgrounds.

“As successful intranets are about much more than technology, it is very interesting to get a good mix of contacts, including from communications departments in other firms”, says Kester.

There is a sense of belonging in the network, which makes the sharing take place in an open, but also confidential way. He feels that the structure of the J. Boye groups plays an important role in establishing these intimate relationships that are vital to any knowledge sharing network.

“In between the meetings, I follow-up with specific members for more in-depth discussions and solution finding”

Making it work is a two way street – how I do it

“Take the network serious. The other participants are really interested in your questions, ideas and progress. Take the chance to get feedback and give feedback yourself”
